Can someone please advise me how to set up my Apple TV 4K as a hub. I was having issues with it working as a hub and removed my home from the home app on my iPhone. Now I do not see the option on my Apple TV to set up as a hub and on my phone I cannot access any of my smart devices away from home. I am running the latest iOS 12 beta if that helps.

Thanks.

I will simply point you to Apple's instructions.

One thing you said that I don't understand, "...removed my home from the Home app..." It would make sense that after doing that you can't see or control your devices.

Hi the only reason I removed it was because I was having issues remotely accessing anything from my phone. I still cannot seem to access any of my devices remotely from my phone. Is there anyway of knowing if hub is enabled on my Apple TV?

From the linked support document:

“After you sign in to iCloud, your Apple TV automatically sets itself up as a home hub. To check the status of your home hub, go to Settings > Accounts > iCloud and look under HomeKit to see if your home hub is connected.”

I do not see any option that displays home hub when I am in this area.

Only Apple TV 4K or Apple TV (4th generation) support HomeKit. You must have an older model.

Are you on tvOS 12 beta? It’s a known issue in beta 6, seems like it still is in beta 7.

EDIT: Another common mistake is not enabling 2 factors authentication.

Have any of these steps not worked?

Set up Apple TV as a home hub

  1. On your iOS device or Mac, set up two-factor authentication for your Apple ID. Then go to iCloud and make sure that you have iCloud Keychain turned on.
  2. On your Apple TV, go to Settings > Accounts and make sure that you're signed in to iCloud with the same Apple ID as your iOS device.
  3. After you sign in to iCloud, your Apple TV automatically sets itself up as a home hub. To check the status of your home hub, go to Settings > Accounts > iCloud and look under HomeKit to see if your home hub is connected. Learn what to do if you don’t see HomeKit.
Otherwise you might need to reset the Apple TV to clear out old settings that might be causing problems. Unfortunately this means reinstalling purchased apps and re-entering old settings. I haven’t experienced this with homekit but needed to do this for another app that was misbehaving.

I have never been able to get this to work either on my new 4K AppleTV. The AppleTV never sets up.

The spouse has had a homepod setup as a hub for awhile using her apple IDs. We tried setting up the Apple TV using her ID but no joy. Then tried setting up a different home using my IDs and phone... no joy. Don't have a clue why as there doesn't seem to be any error messages anywhere. I was just starting to look into this when I saw this post and hoped for a simple solution. Not yet, but I thought I'd mention that Ionman is not the only one not able to set up the AppleTV as a Hub using apple's directions precisely, including what to do about a failure. The Apple TV hub just doesn't show its connected and there is no clue what the problem is.... ... I know so unapple like :)

Why not have her share her home with you.
it'll also make scenes available to you both instead of having to both create the same scenes.
she'll just have to make sure she enables remote access.

location automations will have a choice of certain person, or everyone.

She does share her home, we were just trying to set up the ATV as a secondary hub (as many others have) to cover more of the house and noted that it doesn't activate regardless of which user account (iCloud, iTunes) the ATV is set up with.... similar to Ionman. Its a mistery.

I tried HomeKit for a while. Problem is it works off of my phone for the waking of objects as I get closer, not so for other devices unless everyone is on the same AppleID. When the house went dark on my wife once because I left on a trip, that was the end of it. I never knew my wife of 30 years could be such a texting potty mouth.
