Homepod as an AppleTV speaker

This is driving me crazy.

I can easily select my 2 Homepods as Apple TV speakers from the ATV audio menu. It might work, but it might not work.

If I keep trying I can get it working, but then I'll pause the video or something and it breaks again. Is there any recipe to making this reliable?
