Hi All,

Upgraded all my macOS/watchOS/iOS/iPadOS/tvOS devices yesterday, but I'm having issues with my two HomePod Mini's. From the onset, they just wouldn't recognise the update, even though toggling the "automatic updates" in the Home app told me there were updates to be applied. They just wouldn't show up.

So I plugged them into my MacBook and did a restore to 18.0. They appear to recognise and setup fine, but they're both stuck in a 'Configuring' state in the Home app.

Things I've tried without success.
  1. Restored them from my MacBook to 18.0 and set them up with my iPhone 13 Pro Max.
  2. Restored them again (using the hold for 10 seconds after power on method), and also deleted them from my iCloud devices list.
  3. Set up a second "home" in the Home app, and added them to that.
I've restored them and ran through combinations of the above no less than 10 times now. Each and every time, they sit there at the 'Configuring' state. I left it overnight thinking it might just take a while, but that didn't make a difference.

Any thoughts or anything else to try?

So I can't explain how or what I did specifically, but 1 of 2 HomePod Mini's managed to complete the setup successfully, and is no longer in a 'Configuring' state. Works with personalised Siri commands, etc... The other one, even with repeated setup attempts, is still stuck in the 'Configuring' state.

Since my post above, this is what I've done, in no particular order. I don't know what (if any) of it made any difference.
  1. Once again reset the HomePod, using the hold for 10 seconds after power on method, and switched it off without setting it up.
  2. Removed the HomePod from my iCloud devices list.
  3. Removed all configured 'Homes' in the Home.app on my iPhone, and setup a new one.
  4. Explicitly removed my WiFi 5G connection, and connected only to the 2.4G band. I have other smart plugs that can only be added to the Home.app when I'm on the 2.4G band.
I then setup both HomePod Mini's again, and after some time, one of them completed setup. No luck with the other.

As mentioned by another user, I didn't make any changes to my Apple account region. So while it may be a potential solution, I have one of my HomePod Mini's working without doing so. It's something to do with the account though. At one stage, the state of the HomePod in the Home.app was flipping between 'Configuring' and 'Account !', indicating issues with the account to some extent.

I got all of mine to work. Looks like all it took was removing the HomePods that were stuck at configuring from my Apple account in settings.

If they didn’t automatically correct themselves (some finished configuring without a reset) then I had to do the tap and hold the top until 3 beeps reset. All working now! :)

This new home architecture is a lot quicker. The “configuring” only showed up for 10s maybe even less.

Awesome, this actually helped getting my last remaining HomePod working. It was in the 'Configuring' state overnight, and then I left it as-is, and removed it from my iCloud devices list. It was late at night and I went to bed, and by the morning, it was fixed.

Happy to see that we both got our very specific issues resolved. Hope this thread can be helpful to anyone else having the same problem in the future. :)

I have the same issue with an original HomePod. I tried for a full day, doing reset after reset. Nothing worked. I then unplugged it and removed it from my account. I’m guessing it’s an Apple Account problem, so I’m leaving it off for a few days before I try again.

Update: I waited 5 days, tried again, and it worked like a charm. I am pretty sure the HomePod has to talk to Apple servers during setup and they were probably being overwhelmed on update day.

I have a horrible cranking sound time to time on homepod after installing 18.1 beta. Not on the Mini though. So I pause the music and the cranking sound stops, and play again, but it comes back randomly. Very annoying. Unless smth wrong with the hardware:-(

This is happening on all 6 of my minis. No fix yet. No amount of rebooting. Resetting or restoring has helped.

When it crackles I either have to pause and resume or wait. Sometimes if I wait it will stop or the HomePods will crash

Hey there, glad to hear that you fix the problem. Here’s my situation, I got my second HomePod to create a stereo pair a few days ago. I got the same endless configuring state that you guys have been talking about. I did what you did the device from my account Reset it and added it again with the same results. It performs the basic stuff Siri requests plays music, but the stereo pairing thing is not working.

The twist is at my HomePod number one is still on OS 12. I wonder if that is making a difference?

UPDATE

Lol I just checked again in my original HomePod access upgraded from 12 to 18 without so much as a peep. I’m not even sure when it automatically upgraded because they’ve been no problems with it. Meanwhile, the “new guy“ is still stuck “configuring“ I’m gonna remove it from my account reset and re-add it again. 🤣🤣💀
