Sorry, that’s a clumsy title.

I would be the owner/admin/whatever of the HomePod, using my iPhone for initial setup and operation. I would like a speaker to play Apple Music throughout the day even if I leave the house or watch a video on the phone. I don’t want a phone call to broadcast!

I may wish to hear an album or artist or Radio station. I have a 6 hour holiday playlist. Can I play things without my phone being held hostage by the speaker?

TIA

Correct. Say "Hey Siri, play my holiday playlist" and it will play until it runs out of music unless you put it on repeat. It is tied to your Apple Music account so it will not need your phone at all.

Just ask Siri on the HomePod to play a specific playlist, song, artists, etc...
It doesn't use the phone at all when you do this.
