I actually think this is a poor design, if they had simply put a usb connector on the mini it would have offered options to use a shorter cable when installed near a socket rather than having to loose load of cable.

Looks like a cost saving design to me.

Well, umm, it is 99 bux. Is there a cheaper Apple device?
