Hello everyone.
One small quirk that I have with the Home Theater feature (behavior confirmed to me by Apple as intended).
If you make the Homepods the default apple tv audio output, put the apple tv to sleep, and then ask siri to play some music , the music will play through the apple tv music app (even when the apple tv is sleeping and apparently off), instead of being played by the Homepods themselves directly from apple servers. As long as its linked to the apple tv, the homepod is no longer an independent device.
This is unfortunate, because I have done several non scientific tests and concluded that music sound quality is slightly worse when played through the apple tv music app and the sent to the Homepods, than when the homepods are not linked to the apple tv and play the same content by themselves directly from apple servers.
Anyone else have noticed this?. Thanks in advance.
I CAN tell Siri on the homepods to play music, or airplay music from my iphone/ipad and the apple tv will remain off, but it is in fact using the apple tv music app in the background to do the actual playback. Try to unplug the apple tv while the homepod is playing music and the music will stop.
This was confirmed to me by apple support. The Homepods, when setting as the default audio output of an Apple TV 4K, will only play the content through the apple tv apps (podcast, music, movies...), even when airplaying.
This also causes issues with multi room audio.
