So as the title says, I’ve bought an Honor Pad X8a tablet and no matter what I do I can not get it to connect to my iPhone 16 pro hotspot, thing is my iPhone tells me there’s a connection but the tablet is saying “obtaining IP address” and then it fails every time, I’ve tried resetting the iPhone and the tablet settings but nothing works I’ve tried moving the switch on hotspot to “maximise compatibility” but still no joy can anyone point out to me where I’m going wrong? 🤷🏼‍♂️ and just to add….the tablet will connect to home WiFi but because I’m out and about most of the time I need the tablet to connect to hotspot.

You running any VPN software or similar that can affect the network functionality on your iphone?
I have never messed around with the Honor pad, but does it have any wifi settings where you can use a different frequency (5ghz or 2.4) or a different standard, try N instead of AC etc.

Can you connect other things to your iPhone 16 in hotspot mode?

So here’s the thing, on a daily basis including today I’ve had my laptop and smart tv connected to my iPhone hotspot without any problem, so anything will connect to my phones hotspot and the honor tablet will connect to home WiFi but they won’t connect together 🤷🏼‍♂️ apparently the tablet will connect to 5ghz and 2.4ghz so I’ve ruled that out it’s as though apple and honor don’t get on 😳

Strange issue. Since it states obtaining IP, I guess its actually connecting to your phone but they can't seem to negotiate properly after that.
If you enter the wrong password for your iPhone I'm guessing that the Honor will state "wrong password"?

If you would you would to set a static IP (just for fun) on your Honor (check IP-range on your phone), does that make a difference? That way you override the DHCP part.

What iOS version are you on?

Edit: Can you check if your Honor supports IPv6 and has that enabled?

Your to technical for me all that has gone over my head, I have seen static IP and when I Pressed it “connect” was greyed out so no idea what it’s for, I don’t know what IPv6 is but I’ve decided to ring Honor customer support tomorrow and if they can’t sort it I’ll take it back to where I bought it from and maybe get a Samsung instead as they connect to anything 👍 thank you for your help though 🙂

Sorry, its easy to get a bit to technical/geeky.
It's hard to know what the issue can be and also on what device that is causing it.

My main recommendations is to update both your iPhone and Tablet to the latest iOS and Android versions. There are some iOS versions that has had connectivity issues when using it as a hotspot. So give them both an update and restart them to make sure you at least tried that.
The latest iOS version is 18.5 and its a solid release. Android it depends on your device.

And if you swap it for a Samsung it's also a good choice, they are good devices with good support.
