I understand that I can mirror the display of my iMac to an external monitor using the vga connector so long as the resolutions match.

Looking at a dell lcd 24" it says thats is native res is 1920x1200. I cant see on the specs but would it support 1440x900?

I am wondering if it would be good enought to watch DVDs and slideshows etc from frontrow. Does anyone already do this?

It may be able to scale down to 1440x900, but it may look horrid on a 24inch screen.

One other option is to use the screen-spanning tool to switch on extended desktop mode. You should them be able to use the monitor at it's 1920x1200 resolution and have extra desktop space as well.
