How would i go about doing this, what apps do i need to do. some one told me something along the lines of eyetv , or shark tv something like that. idk

Hooking my iMac up to a cable box.

Explain what you mean... Do you want to capture video and sound from cable television into your Mac? Or are you hoping your Mac and the cable box will hook up, and give birth to a baby video iPod?
If you want to import video into your Mac, you will need some outboard convertor such as one of the Elgato EyeTV models. or the new Miglia unit.
Read the product specifications carefully to make sure they do what you want - their features and requiremennts vary. Some units work only with digital TV, some only in NAmerica, some only in Europe. I don't know which ones work in Freehold.

basically i want it so that in one part of my computer screen i can be watching tv, and in another i can be on iChat, safari,etc.
