Hooking up more than 2 monitors to a Mac Book or Mac Mini

How would you connect more than 1 monitor to a Mac Book (Pro or not) and a Mac Mini? Can I use regular LCD monitors that have VGA or HDMI connections?
 
what year macbook? if it has thunderbolt, you could get a thunderbolt to HDMI. you would have to go into settings/displays to change the settings. I am unsure if it would support two monitors,but if it has two thunderbolt ports, it just might...
