Hooking up my macbook pro to hdmi tv... cant find answer on other threads

Ok so I have a mini DVI to HDMI converter then an HDMI cable connecting it to my TV. However when i go to the HDMI input of my TV the only thing that comes up on the screen is that generic pinkish and bluish starry galaxy screen. How do I get the image from my computer onto the screen please help!?!?
 
Try lowering your resolution to a lower setting.

How long is the HDMI cable?
 
ok i figured out the video now how do i get sound im using an HDMI and sound is usually carried on them. do i need an audio cable too? that just doesnt make sense with an hdmi cord
 
You are not 'mirroring the screen' you are essentially adding another display. Go to your display settings in your prefs.
 
yea you arnt 'mirroring the display' go to preferences and go to displays and click on mirror displays. OR you can just use it as an additional display and just scroll your mouse over to the tv or just drag a window into the tv.
