Hooking up to TV

Have my laptop hooked up with the hdmi cable and the mini mac cable. PROBLEM is it is stuck on the galaxy background that's the Mac default. Nothing else from my comp can be seen. WHAT do I do?

And explain simply.

The TV's display just basically shows the mac's background? You could have it set up as a separate display, like one would do with two monitors side-by-side. Just go into the preferences and change the display so it mirrors the mac, like the person above me said.

You're extending the display, not mirroring it. You can either drag windows over to the external display or turn on mirroring.
