Tired of paying over $1K for a phone that can’t take a pictures up close…the iPhone 12 Pro Max has sucked for the camera. Apple got it’s customers good on this phone.
Every iPhone has had a better camera than the last iPhone. That's one of the features you can always count on the be improved. How much it will be improved though is the actual debate.

Why do you feel suckered by Apple though? The camera is just one feature of the iPhone and isn't Apple's primary focus when designing a device. I mean, you wouldn't buy a camera and then complain that it's got poor quality calling and texting features would you?

Your phone hasn’t “sucked for the camera.” Yes, the iPhone does not take good macro shots (at all), but that does not make it suck overall. It’s a mobile phone camera. Temper your expectations. Nowhere is it promoted to take good macro photos. It takes decent normal range photos.

How much have you tested the camera? Did you test it with any third-party apps or just the stock app? I have an app called Camera+ which can do some decent macro photography just fine and on older iPhones as well. I'm no macro photographer, so I don't know what the app's limits are, but I definitely know it can do a lot more than the stock app can. That would imply to me that it's not the camera hardware that sucks (albeit it's a mobile phone camera), it's only the stock software that's limiting.

If photo quality is that important you wouldn’t be relying solely on a phone camera.

The pictures from the iPhones this year are great, better than anything that came before it from Apple and next year will be improved upon again across the new devices.

By just saying it sucks without providing a case Carries no weight, I’ve found the 12 pro max camera to be excellent. Also if your comparing it to actual DSLR cameras of course it won’t be as good as them
I have one…I know better …up close it sucks big time.

I would not use the stock app. Camera+ 2 is a good app for macro shots. I have taken some really nice shots of my tarantulas with Camera+ 2. It’s not as good as my DSLR but it’s close will a little editing.
Explain…so $1500 for iPhone and $7.99 piece of software make it a miracle macro shooter?

You're paying $1500 for a phone/computer/media device/email device/texting device/game console/web browser/app machine that just happens to have a camera. You're not paying $1500 for a camera that happens to do all that other stuff. If that's all you buy a phone for perhaps you should try an actual camera instead.

Nope, best point and shoot camera on the market, only thing missing is decent optical zoom. which should be getting a upgrade once the iPhone 14 arrives.

Maybe a Samsung galaxy phone is a better choice for you, heard the camera lag, shutter lag and blurry photos are great on them phones. 🤔😂
No it isn’t …link with tests saying it is?

Buy a different phone next time. Maybe a Xiaomi. Get the phone that fits your needs rather than calling "it sucks" because "it's expensive and doesn't do what I want".

The reason I moved from my note 9 was because of the blurry camera at just the slightest movements. Gets annoying very quickly when you have kids you want decent pictures of at sports events. The Apple camera handles that so much better!

Gotta love a guy who starts a thread that basically consists of him saying "it sucks it sucks it sucks" over and over again, then demands links to evidence when someone contradicts him.
It does not appear that OP is here for suggestions or solutions - or any evidence or advice that contradicts their bias. Rather, they seem to want validation and everyone to agree with them.

If you are looking for a great macro camera, Nikon and Canon sell great cameras with great macro lens available for them. A phone is not a professional camera. But Apple sure does well for what it does.

Edit: Here are some Macro shots with Camera+ 2. These were taken within 4-6 inches of my tarantulas.
