Horizontal lines appearing while watching animated DVD

When I use my iMac's DVD player program to view an animated movie (one of my South Park seasons to be exact), lines appear on the characters' mouths and occasionally on characters when they move. I've tried both VLC player and DVD player program and saw the same results (VLC player was actually worse). Has anyone else seen something similar to this? I'm thinking I just have to adjust a setting somewhere, but I'm not sure what.
