As the title says above I’m experiencing a horrible quality on portrait mode on my 12 Pro Max. I’ve noticed this on both photos of people and objects. Anyone else?

Works great for me:

But i can agree that sometimes it fails depending on the subject and surrounding environment. If it fails for all photos that is not right and something is broken. Most likely software, try to restart phone firstly then reset phone.

Probably due to backlight situation came from your window behind the subject.
Also the transparent part of the bottle got the phone confused, for it also passing through some of the background visual.

Also makesure you have decent space between your camera and the subject. No ”move farther away” warning and the portrait mode sign (“Natural Light”) turns yellow.
