Odd thing occurred: My iMac is set never to sleep (yes, I'm a slavedriver...), but I have it set to sleep the display after 20 minutes, and the lower left hot corner also sleeps the display. Last night I did the hot corner thing, and this morning the whole Mac was peacefully sleeping. Woke up fine, no problems. But why did it go to sleep? Thanks.

Check you Energy Saver settings in the Preferences. The computer is probably setup to go to sleep after a certain amount of time. If its set to never, change it off never for a short period of time, let the computer to go to sleep, then wake it back up and reset the computer to never go to sleep.
Also, check the Schedule to see if your computer is setup to sleep at a certain time.
