Hot Corner, what is it?

Hello, and sorry for such a basic question. I've come across the phrase Hot Corner several times now, but not any explanation of what it is or how it works or why someone would want one? Is it just a shortcut to an application? Any enlightenment would be most welcome. Thanks,
