I sometimes hook my TV to my rMBP using the HDMI cable. It works great, but I've been wondering is it safe to do? Can you just plug the cable in, and then plug it out (hot plugging) without turning the MacBook off - without the fear of causing some surge or whatever and potentially damaging the MacBook?

The question is probably silly as I've found several guides on connecting the MBP with a TV and no one mentions powering down, but better to ask just to be safe.
