Anyone have personal experience that they can share with using stand alone hot spots from AT&T or Verizon? I've found that the hot spot created by the iPhone via WiFi to be somewhat flaky (and ideally would be great to not have to manually tether via USB). Am wondering if the AT&T or Verizon versions are better. And if the antenna are stronger than on the iPhone for pulling in signal.

I've personally never had an issue with using my iPhone as a hotspot over WiFi or USB tether. I am on Verizon.

I also have an AT&T Unite Explore and have never had an issue with it over WiFi either.

So I ended up getting the AT&T Unite Explore. Signal acquisition may be a tiny bit better than the iPhone, but not dramatically better. Main advantage I've found is that it's much more reliable as a hot spot than the iPhone, as in it's never an issue. Using the iPhone (and the iPad) as hotspots is too flaky (over WiFi), and using the USB can be a bit cumbersome.
