Hotmail email alerts in OS X?

Hi,

Is there a simple way in OS X to be notified of email received in Hotmail, without logging into my Hotmail account (such as a toolbar on the desktop)?

Also, I remember a friend of mine's Windows computer would make a loud alert noise whenever he received email. Can I do the equivalent with my Hotmail account on a Mac?
