I set up my hotmail as my mail account in general mail settings. Whenever I click on the mail icon, my inbox will update when there are any new emails. But even though I have my settings to "push", emails will never push.

Any tips? Am I doing something wrong?

Umm try setting it up with Microsoft Exchange?

Also if you happen to be on Tesco, I believe they don't have push data on it.

Edit: I'm not really sure, person below seems to have answered it.

The mail app won't push hotmail accounts because they are pop3 rather than SMTP.

You can get an app call mBox mail that will push hotmail to your phone.

dam, that's too bad. ok, i'll give that app a try.

thanks guys.

edit: any other apps like that that are free?

does anyone have their hotmail configured via exchange activesync? i heard it may be able to work this way?

I thought hotmail via exchange activesync isn't available until the end of summer. Has anyone gotten it working?

I've been using Hotmail in my mail accounts since the 3GS. I thought maybe this was an old thread.

activesync is working for some people and some not. i dont think microsoft/hotmail has converted all their existing accounts to support it yet?

i've been waiting for this and some blog user comments are showing that some people are getting it to work and some arent. you can try and see if its working for you.

setup the mailbox as an exchange account,

username: your full email email (hotmail.com, live.com, etc.)
password: your pw
domain: m.hotmail.com
and i think ssl should be on. (not sure though)

after setting it up and your getting a password error, its not active on your account yet.

there was some talk from a microsoft admin on the hotmail/live blog that they are fully implementing activesync by the end of summer.

password error for me!

you just have to wait for microsoft to move your account to support activesync then.

is gmail push supported? i created a gmail account in my iphone and forwarded my hotmail emails to my gmail account and it seems to be doing the same thing the hotmail account was when i first started this whole thing (ie. able to retrieve emails only when i click on the mail icon).

did you set the gmail up via exchange option or by clicking gmail option?

If you set up Gmail as exchange, it'll push not only your emails, but your contacts and calendar as well.

username: username@gmail.com
password: xxxxx
server: m.google.com
domain (leave blank)
SSL: on

I just recently set up my hotmail account on my iphone and it hasn't been syncing with the web-based hotmail. So if I delete a message on the hotmail webpage, or mark one as read, it doesn't sync that back to iphone mail app, and vice-versa.

How do you set it up to do that?

you need to set it up as an exchange account, look at the posts above. this may or may not work for you since microsoft hasn't implemented activesync on all hotmail/live accounts yet.
