i have a problem connecting my macbook pro to free wifi some times. so question is, if i connect my iphone to free wifi and then turn it into a hotspot for my macbook pro will i be using data. just wonder because i would be using free wifi.

No you can't do that it'll switch to 3G/4g and use the wifi antenna for the hotspot. Even tethered using USB it'll revert to mobile data.

That said if your phone can connect your mb should be able to. If it dosnt there is a settings issue.
 
thats what i thought. wife has the macbook pro and is 300 miles away so cant really get to it.

Just tell her to go into the advanced settings on the network and delete out previously connected to networks. I'm sure you could text or email over a simple guide. That will more than likely resolve her issues.
