may I begin by saying that I am a complete novice…so please be patient…
My grandson has given me his old ATV1 and i want to put kodi on it…but haven’t got a clue!
Tried to find someone locally who could do it, but no success!!
Can anyone give me a very simple process guide…I also have his old MacBook for downloading stuff.
someone suggested that i should take out the fan and hdd and put a graphics card (Broadcom BCM970015) in place of the wifi card and use a ’wifi dongle’ in the usb port…will this work?
I have the time (i am retired now) I have the ambition, but am zero Rated on knowledge…
thank you for any help you can give me...

my update thus far…

went to the page you suggested…(thank you) and followed the instructions as follows:

inserted usb stick 32gb into MacBook

went to :

http://www.hackmyappletv.com/how-to-jailbreak-and-hack-your-appletv-1-for-kodi-xbmc/

applied the list of commands via terminal…

curl -O http://chewitt.openelec.tv/usb/install-hdd.img.gz

(this appears to download relevant file)

then onto:…

diskutil list | grep -v disk0 | tail +2

(this identifies the usb stick / mine showed up as ‘disk 2’)

then to unmount your USB drive…

diskutil unmountDisk /dev/disk1

(I had to change the ‘1’ at the end to ‘2’ as my usb showed up as ‘disk 2’)

finally, you enter the following command…

gunzip -c install-hdd.img.gz | sudo dd of=/dev/rdisk1 bs=1m

(I had to change the ‘rdisk1’ to ‘rdisk2’ to identify my usb)

success…it writes to usb !! shows ‘can’t read usb”…but that’s OK apparently…

put usb into ATV1 and waited patiently…starts up and attempts to load onto ATV1..then i get the following error message...

Connecting to releases.openelec.tv (82.220.2.33:80)
wget: can't open ‘/mnt/rootfs': Is a directory
md5sum: can't open 'mnt/rootfs/mach_kernel’ : No such file or directory
cat: can't open ’/mnt/rootfs/mach_kernel.md5’: No such file or directory
md5sum: can’t open '/mnt/rootfs/system’: No such file: or directory
cat: can’t open ’ /mnt/rootfs/system.md5’: No such file: or directory

fail: Checksum does not match. aborting!

info: Telnet login available; user = ’root’ and password = ‘root’

tried it 3 times on 3 different usb sticks…no luck !!

can any expert please tell me where I’m going wrong

Most names in the new world come from somewhere else, so it's not surprising (although we're officially named after Texas legend Sam Houston). We have a towns in Texas called "London", "Paris" and "Athens", and we even have one called "Palestine".
