hovering over status bar

since updating to Big Sur I can't just hover over different items on the right hand side of status bar to get a drop down. On the left (file, edit, view, etc,) I can just click once and move cursor left and right to bring down menus. On the right (battery, control center, bluetooth, etc) I have to click each icon. I don't remember it being like that in Catalina. is there a setting for this?

Your recollection is incorrect, just tried it on a Catalina system and it is exactly the same as on a Big Sur one.
