It’s been a couple years since getting my Apple Watch so I’m not clear on how this is done. I’m on ATT and will want to transfer the cell service from my current watch to my new one. Has anyone done this recently?

Apple has a support article on the matter:

Transfer your cellular plan to a new Apple Watch

When you’re ready to start using a new Apple Watch, you can transfer cellular service from your old watch to your new one. Here’s how:
  1. Remove the cellular plan from your old Apple Watch. You can do this from the Apple Watch app or by erasing your old Apple Watch.
  2. Pair your new Apple Watch with your iPhone. During setup, tap “Set up Cellular” to add a cellular plan.
  3. Some carriers allow you to transfer your existing plan to your new Apple Watch directly from the Apple Watch app.
  4. If you don’t see an option to transfer your cellular plan, contact your carrier for help.

Thanks. I had read that but I’m concerned about the instructions to remove the cell plan from the old watch. Will doing this actually transfer the existing service to the new watch? I know this will vary by carrier. But has anyone on ATT done this?

Even though Apple has instructions to remove the cell plan from the old watch first I’ve found several posts as well as replies stating they did the opposite, retained the cell plan when the option was presented, and everything proceeded without issue. A fair number who opted to delete the cell plan first reported issues. The respondents who have AT&T as I do retained the cell plan which is what I will do.

Yeah I’ve had cellular watches every year ever since the series 3 and I always keep the data plan when transferimg and my carrier transfers it over. That means my pay subscription is locked in because sometimes they increase the subscription costs for new subscribers

Thank you!! Haven’t done this in a couple years and don’t remember specifically what I did. Looking through the support article that says to remove the plan confused me. I’m also trying to avoid another activation fee that AT&T always seem to add. Thanks again for your response🙏

Those instructions are horrible!

LOL

They basically say - delete your plan - and then if you cannot add it back to your new watch you better contact your carrier.

Really?

Anyways - If I remove my cellular plan first, then I cannot add it to another watch and, you guessed it must call my carrier. I have Rogers in Canada.

I’ve gotten a few other responses from another forum and they’ve said, un-pair your old watch, opt to retain the cell plan. And then when you pair the new one you’ll get the option to set up with the existing plan. I agree with you those directions are very confusing. Which is why I’ve been posting this question around. It made no sense to me to remove the plan. I was quite concerned that it would just complicate things making me have to call my carrier. And probably delay the cell service from being active.

Anyone done this lately? Anyone done this with T-Mobile?
I’m on AT&T but I suspect it would work the same way and it was fairly simple. When my new Ultra came in I just turned it on, had my phone nearby, used that onscreen display to pair it with the watch, went through the different steps until the set up cellular screen came up. It offered 2 options, set up a new plan or transfer the existing one over to it. I chose that and everything proceeded properly. It even installed the watchOS update that was out at the time for the Ultras during this set up process. The whole thing took about 30 minutes or less. After everything was functioning then I unpaired the old watch.

Trying to find specific instructions can be confusing. But since you can pair more than one watch to a phone there is no need to unpair the old one first nor remove anything since both watches could conceivably have their own cell plan if desired. When I went through this I figured the worst it could be was to have to call into AT&T but everything was pretty simple. Just turn it on and go through the steps as they are presented.

Upgrading to the Ultra 2 from the 1. This is helpful thank you!

Since this thread has already been resurrected, I’ll answer.

As part of the new watch setup process, I was asked if I’d like to transfer my TMO cell plan from my old watch or set up a new one.

I chose to transfer and it did so quickly. Couldn’t be simpler.
