After using my Mac for a year now, I have come to notice the ~/Library directory is 5GB. How normal is this honestly ? I have a large number of applications installed, so I am guessing thats where it all comes from.

Mine's only 763 MB. How big is your /Library? Mine's just under 6GB...2GB Application Support, 1.65GB Printers, 1GB Audio (Garageband Loops).

1.97GB.

I recently removed quite a few large video files and transfered over 15GB of music to my external drive, so now my library is around the typical size.

Hmm seems people are posting two different libraries here. The one with Garageband loops is /Library the one which was asked for (~/Library) is the one in your home directory (/Users/username/Library).

Anyway for completeness sake /Library is 27.73GBs and ~/Library is 151MBs.

The base installation for Garageband loops puts them in /Library, but you can there is also a directory in ~/Library where you can put additional loops.

~/Library is 1.46GB. (Cache, Omnigraffle stuff, Mail)
/Library is 8.8 GB Mostly garageband, idvd, apple loops stuff.
