Currently, I can only effectively switch to a 2.2 gamma, which looks good on my late 2008 unibody MacBook Pro, but is still too light for me, especially when compared to other displays, including my Samsung monitor, my iPad, and even my iPhone 3GS. I've been wanting to set the gamma higher but I haven't found an easy way to only change the gamma while leaving everything else exactly the way that it is. I have Leopard installed now. I do have Snow Leopard, but I never got around to installing it for whatever reason. If Snow Leopard lets you set the gamma wherever you would like, that's great. For my Samsung monitor, I had to set the gamma myself. The gamma was shockingly low and had to be dramatically adjusted when I first hooked up my Samsung monitor to my MacBook Pro.
