iPod how can i be sure?

Somewhere close to a dairy in East Texas
My trusty 2G iPod will boot to my computer. But, it won't turn on when it's not plugged into the computer.

Sounds like the battery has finally quit charging to me. Is there any way to know for sure it is the battery? Could it be anything else?
