I want to benchmark my workflow tasks on my Windows machine, to aid in my purchase of the new MacBook Pro. I've never used anything other than Task Manager before. Is this sufficient for me to record what is happening or do I need something more detailed to see if any throttling is occurring?

Just want to paint an accurate picture so I can make the best possible purchase.

Thanks!

You first have to ask yourself what it is that you want measured. That's going to very strongly influence the results you get. If you're a business, you might very well want to measure the time of the entire workflow from start to finish. For most of us, that's going to include A LOT of time when the computer is idling, and then a very small portion of time when it's actually doing something. Already there you can probably suspect that if you want to increase your efficiency, you're much more likely to achieve that with improved workflows than with improved hardware.

However... maybe you're actually interested in measuring just the short time periods when the hardware is the bottleneck? (and for some this can be longer time periods as well) Basically, what you'd always prefer to do is measure your actual workflow task from start to finish using wall clock time. The task manager doesn't enter into it really, neither does any potential throttling or whatever. Throttling may enter into it later, when you're actually analysing your benchmark results and considering how to improve performance.

But basically... stop watch in hand, do your work, write down the time. Simple. :)
