As the title states. Its a huge problem. Repeated texts from random numbers all times of the day. Carrier is no help.

You have my sympathy. I get unwanted messages also, mostly from political parties or politicians wanting my vote or opinion. Some will allow you to send "stop" and that will unsubscribe your number.

I also receive advertisements on occasion and there does not seem to be a way to stop those. Apple really needs to allow a "do not disturb" option for iMessages the same way they do for phone calls.

I usually block individually, and here's how I do it ( if that helps )

1. Open the txt message.
2. Click/Tap on the number that sent the message. This should present you with 3 options, right below that number ( audio, facetime, info )
3. Click on 'Info'. This should open another screen with more details.
4. Click on 'info' again from that screen that opened from step 3.
5. Scroll down on the new screen that opened from step 4, and tap on 'block this caller'.
6. Confirm by tapping ' Block Contact '.
7. Tap the ' < ' arrow on the top left to go back one screen.
8. Tap ' Done ' on the top right to commit the change.

Done.

That's definitely a useful feature when the phone number remains consistent. The unfortunate part is that with most of these the number usually keeps on changing.

I've been wondering this. I have been getting so many election-style Text Messages. If you can silence unwanted calls, why can't you silence unwanted texts?
Part of the feature--the filtering part--is there, but the actual silencing part doesn't seem to be for some reason.

Thanks to all. I dumped the iPhone and went Android. Don't like the OS but does what I want it to do. Also way cheaper so thats nice.

That's the problem. I never see the same number more than once, so I just delete the conversation. Wish there was a better solution for this.
Yeah. The new/updated Messages app unknown sender filtering is an improvement, but for some reason don't silence notifications for those messages (or provides some sort of separate controls for them to do that). It basically just filters things in the Messages app, but that's really it, which is more or less half the job of what something like that is really useful for. The similar feature for unknown callers actually silences those type of calls, so it's a bit strange that the same type of feature for messages ends up working differently.
