You have to spend $599 if you want to have one contract-free.

Only a sucker would pay $300 more then the cost of the thing just saying

Proof of why economics needs to be taught in school!

Actually, buying it wth a contract SAVES you $300. It really does cost $599. People seem to not understand what "subsidized" means. It means that instead of you paying the $599 actual cost for an iPhone, you pay $299. AT&T agrees to pay the other $300, but you have to sign up for a two year contract for them to do so. At the end of the day, Apple still gets $599.

If you buy it with the 2yr contract then you're actually paying about $2000 for the phone. You can get it for $600, and use a cheaper existing plan you already have.

I suppose you could buy one at the lower price with the contract and then cancel the contract and pay the 175.00 early termination fee. That would save a little money. ;)

I guess I will just waite until I'm 18 in October and get my own plane lol

You can't use it with a cheaper plan! AT&T runs random audits on the lines, if they see that you are running an iPhone and you don't have the required data plan - they will add it for you.

It's in the Terms of Service that they can do this.

Maybe they can, but so far they haven't done that for my girlfriend, who uses a 3G without the data plan

That's what im doing, im adding a line to my contract cancel it after 30 days pay the 175 ETF and the months bill. That way next year my current line is going to be available for an upgrade for the next iPhone.
