I'm using Candybar to completely overhaul the look of my system. I'd like to create 3 regular old folders on my desktop but use different icons for them. Is this possible to do?

Where are you going to get your icons from, OS X - or elsewhere? I have a massive collection of OS 9, and earlier, icons, but the folders slope in a different direction. You'd be welcome to some of those.

Do you know how to paste an icon to a folder? If not, post back, I don't want to waste your time with an unnecessary answer.

I have a few icons I downloaded from the Pry icon set. I tried Get Info on the generic folder and dropping the icon onto the current icon but unfortunately it drops the icon file INTO the folder.

Okay, I think you need to change the procedure, but just to be sure:
1. Get Info on the Pry icon of your choice
2. Select and copy the icon showing at the top-left of the Info window
3. Get Info on the generic (blank) folder icon
4. Select the generic folder icon symbol at the top-left of the Info window
5. Paste (either Cmd-V or Edit>Paste)

See how that works and let me know.
