How can I change the icon on an item in finder sidebar?

Hello,

I added my trash can to the finder sidebar but I can't change the icon from a folder to the trash can image. I have tried copying the trash can image by opening trash window then going up to file menu then going to "Get Info" copy the small trash icon. I then go do the same for the trash in finder sidebar "Get Info" and paste it but the image doesn't change in finder.
