Check iphone firmware and baseband.

If iphone 4 4.1 BB 02.10.04 or above its not unlockable.

If anything else, it is unlockable ( 2g 3g 3gs any firmware or BB)

Note that 4.2.1 is tethered ( for now) so...... you will lose your unlock each time you reboot your device. You will have to redo the jailbreak/unlock process each time ( 2-5 min)

-----------

If he claims that the phone is factory unlocked, call apple with the serial number and ask them, they will tell you.

You will have to provide more information on the Iphone you are planing to purchase. Is it a 2g, 3g, 3gs or Iphone 4?

Did he indicate whether it is factory unlocked or it is unlocked through Jailbreaking, then ultrasn0w?

i'm sorry it's a 3GS

Its unlockable.

You can do it yourself in case he is lying so.... go for it.

it's unlocked via JB...also is $330 a good deal? Looks like to sell on fleabay for around $500.

It's for my brother in Germany, not the US

330 for 16gb is a good deal if the phone is a good shape.

330 for 32gb is a very very good deal.

Would you be buying it face-to-face, or something like ebay? I would never buy a second-market iPhone without being able to hold it in my hand first. $330 sounds to good to be true for a 3GS IMO.

Here is where to tell if an iPhone is sporting an unlockable baseband, go to Settings > General > About and if you see 04.26.08, 05.11.07, 05.12.01, or 05.13.04, then you're good. Do some homework on the 6-series basebands.

If already unlockable, then within the Cydia app (Cydia > Manage > Packages, scroll down)
you would see Ultrasnow:

I've seen 16gb 3gs on craiglist for 200-250 at times so no I wouldn't say 330 is a good deal

Same here. These are today posts in Seattle;

I personally bought an Iphone 3GS, 16gig for $200. However, this is rare and I was lucky to be the first to call her and make the deal.

it was going to be a face-to-face tomorrow morning, but from the other posters maybe I'll hold off if $330 isn't that good of a deal.

BTW it is 4.2.1 firmware (the one the has to be redone if phone is restarted)

Okay, for the uninitiated here is how the iphone-buying game works with those craigslist hucksters: They advertise at a low price, you call them saying you're interested, they say cool, you think you have a deal, then before meetup, they text you back saying "This other guy offered me $440 - can you beat that?", then you text them "Thanks for wasting my time you f&*^!#$ douchbag!" You need to offer more than their advertising for, or they'll just wait for another sucker. iPhones are like gold, someone will always be buying.

From what your saying, you are fixing to give your brother in Germany a tethered iPhone? Consider whether he is a techie or not.

I second this. It happened to me as well. I told them this is CL and not fleabay and hang up. The Iphone that I bought from a lady was very nice, she told me she received more than 30 calls within 20 minutes. They even offer higher price than $200 but because I was the first and she had promised me. So, we had a deal.

With the current situation, i think the correct price for 3GS, 16gig in Seattle CL is around $250 - $270. I can buy one at this price any time now. Personally, I will drop even further once the 02.10 baseband unlock for Iphone 4 come out. People will try to upgrade theirs to the 4. So, if you could hold your purchase for a while, I recommend you to do so.
