How can I connect to the wireless internet??

Im trying to set up my new blackbook (my first mac), and I have no clue how to connect to the wireless internet in my house. The names not showing up on the list. I am completely lost.

Do you have a wireless router? Is the network hidden? Is your Airport turned on?

You can also use the Airport Menu by the date and time, it looks like a base ball diamond or a cheese grater.
