Someone sent me a iPhone video to edit with. It's an HEVC file taken on an iPhone 8. I'm running OS Sierra so I can't import it. I can't even open it in QT. I can open it in QT 7.

I tried converting it in MPEGStreamclip. The file went black.

Any ideas on how I can convert it so I can edit with it?

The easy answer is obvious update to Mojave and FCPX 10.4, but I suspect you have your reasons for not doing so. Pavtube has a converter. Short of that I am not aware of a native way to do it.

I haven't updated simply because I have some old projects on FCP 7 I rarely but occasionally dip into.

Do you have an iPhone that will read it? If so, can you send it to that, then import using Image Capture or Photos? If your machine does not support HEVC, the phone should transcode to H.264 before transferring in that case.

You might be able to convert this with Handbrake <-- requires VLC. Both are free to download and use.
