How can I edit video files metadata?

Well, not that simple, issue is that I have movies on a NAS which I can use to stream through home TVs and when I access the folder containing the files not going through a dedicated streaming box like the AppleTV I sometimes don't get the file name but some data which is, say, a name applied from the movie ripper or stuff like that and I'd like to be able to check the movies in that folder and, eventually, only update the metadata without to convert them into a different format.

Any hints?

A lot of people use Subler to edit meta data, which is still free I think.
