there is almost always a small rectangular box on the corner of my screen that states:
WD anywhere backup;
sometimes there is a box statingthat my mozy backup started.

is it due to growl? how can i eliminate it? i figured out how to move it from the top right corner where it always blocked the search function or the mac HD on the desktop. so now it is in the bottom left corner, but how can i eliminate it.

what is the purpose of growl?

You can make that box go away by unregistering the associated application from Growl's notification system. Growl is a system for providing systemwide notifications of significant events. For instance, if you use Adium, Growl can tell you when a contact logs in.
