How can I remove Apps from iTunes on OSX without deleting them on my iPad?

I made the mistake of automatically syncing apps. I've since disabled this for a few weeks now. I only care if the applications are in my purchases tab on iTunes with no desire to back them up on my Mac. Is there any way to remove them without deleting them off my iPad? I noticed when I remove them from iTunes on my Mac they vanish from my iPad even though syncing isn't checked any longer. I know they will remain in my purchases tab for later downloading regardless.
