i like to have a backup just in case something happened to my phone/itunes....is it possible to save my contacts to my pc in a non-itunes file for future use in case of emergency so i could just add it to a new phone if i ever had to

IIRC, they are automatically synced to Address Book on a Mac.

On Win, I'm not sure ... What about iCloud?

I once sync'd it with Google and then exported the contacts as a XML file from the site.

There might be an easier way now though.

i don't use outlook, but do i need a software for windows contacts

Plug your iphone to itunes, click on the iphone on the left and then go to the info tab.
click the box sync contacts with: windows contacts.
Then it will copy all your contacts to your computer and you can go to the following folder on your hard drive and view, edit or delete them.
C:\Users\"yourname"\Contacts
You dont need any software for windows contacts.

My contacts sync OTA w/ Google....not sure why one would do it any other way
