I accidently formatted my camera's CF memory card, now I'm trying to use software to recover the data. The problem is when I plug in my camera it opens Lightroom/iPhoto/Image Capture, rather than appearing as a drive in finder.

Without using a card reader (I don't have one!) how can I get my dslr to show up as a drive on the desktop in OS X?

Thanks in advance.

Open the preferences for Lightroom/iPhoto/Image Capture and disable the setting for "Automatically Open when Camera is Connected" or something to that effect. When you plug in your camera and turn it on, it should mount to the desktop.

This is exactly what I do. I have a Nikon D200, connect it via USB, turn it on, and it mounts as a drive. I manually copy the files to a folder that I have on the desktop called "For Lightroom Import", and after they are sucessfully copied I turn off and disconnect the camera, then open Lightroom and import. This prevents any problems with accidental deleltion or corruption--only format the memory card when you are sure the photos have been sucessfully imported into Lightroom (or whatever software you're using).

Annoying, isn't it? Good thing the new Macbook Pros have an expressCard slot so you can put in a CF reader if you want.

Oh....wait.

Good thing I got mine before they got shafted :p
