How can I use my UK iPhone 4 in the US?

I'm a British citizen picking up my iPhone 4 in London next week, then I'll be on holiday in New York a month later for two weeks.

Is there anyway I can pick up a data plan whilst I'm there and can I change the SIM without having to connect to a computer?

If it's the Unlocked Ones from Apple, you should be able to replace it with a Sim from the US without connecting it to a computer.
