How Can We Start Developing Apps for AppleWatch?

I'm just curious if WatchKit is yet available and what would be the best way to start making my own Watch companion app.

I would imagine that a person can't just create a solo Watch app, but they may be able to create an iOS app that resides somewhere on an iPhone, hidden perhaps... only to provide a unique functionality (or for gimmicky reasons) on the Watch.

I want to be ready for Watch launch day and have an app available, ready to go.

They mentioned WatchKit, but didn't make it available. It'll probably be released some time after Sept 19. They want all eyes (and wallets) on the iPhone 6 right now.
