I have my home directory on a separate drive (/Users/[me] is a symlink pointing to a folder on the other drive). The system drive is encrypted, MacOS handles all that automagically of course, but how can I get my home directory encrypted?

If I encrypt the whole second drive then it’s not decrypted on boot so I can’t log in (Since my home folder isn’t accessible).

Are either of these options possible?

  • Tell MacOS to separately encrypt your home folder
  • Set MacOS to decrypt an arbitrary volume on boot, after you’ve entered the password to decrypt the primary drive.
  • Any other solution
