It is infrared laser, not optical.
is it tho? If I view my TV remote thru my cell phone camera and press buttons, the phone will show the remote transmitter lighting up.. but when I do the same with the bottom of the mouse, nothing..

What's weird is that if you flip the mouse top towards you, the pointer acceleration completely changes. How would it know?? I think there's some sort of black magic involved here

I don't agree with your initial claim that "all other mice" have red (visible) lasers. Some are not visible. I have a Dell wired USB that I have used for about 15 years. I simply like the feel, and the laser is not visible at any time.
All depends on the optical wavelength of the laser in the mouse.
The mouse still works the same, just that the laser is not visible. The "black magic" is, that there is no added "voodoo", the laser operates on a non-visible wavelength. It's just a choice that the manufacturer makes...

People actually use the Apple Magic Mouse?

Sorry, couldn't help myself, lol. Really hoping for a quality ergonomic redesign from Apple.
