How come we (US) don't have mayors like this?

John Hyde was the Gay mayor of Perth,don't know if he still is or what his politics are.

IIRC, the mayor of San Francisco is straight and married. The guy he ran against was gay, I think. But it goes without saying that you couldn't get elected mayor there without being pro-gay rights.
Or how about this. A US election campaign where one of the candidates for the most high profile Christian party uses "every" opportunity she can to kiss other females on stage:

I'm confused. What does being have to do with being warmly accepting of S&M? I'm gay to the core and that sh*t freaks me out.

since when did someone become the "Gay mayor" of a place? certainly each identity group doesn't get their own mayor, otherwise, you'd have dozens of mayors.
the Mayor of a City can be gay, but the emphasis on orientation is a bit scary...
that and the way people describe blacks as "african-american"... aren't they just americans whose skin happens to be different from the "majority group"? what the hell were the 60s about again?

Why is everyone focusing on the gay part? I think its far more interesting that the mayor openly welcomes S/M into the city!
The mayor where I live in Providence, RI (That's Rhode Island to all you Americans who failed geography ) is gay. Not really a "major" city, but fairly good sized.

Because most American's won't admit there are sex positions outside of missionary. Remember, the fundies have always always been taught that sex for pleasure is a sin.
