A ~$500-750 would be a sweet spot for most of us. Maybe sell the speakers separately or drop them entirely? Make the display smaller at 24", 27", or 30" inches.

Like making money from you... ;)

If you want a cheaper display (possibly with a set of trade-offs per above), there are plenty of options not made by apple.

Apple focuses on a specific niche, and they are good at filling that niche. If you want something cheaper, you’re best off seeking third party - which is where other manufacturers do a better job.

You’ll struggle to find a modern monitor with no speakers at all, as displayport and hdmi both include audio.

Yup, thats one option.

Apple like to focus on the devices they think they can do better than other people. Which is premium gear with integration features with the rest of their platforms. E.g. the studio display has an iPhone 11 SOC in it essentially to control the centre stage camera. That's ONE reason it is expensive; they could get rid of the inbuilt centre stage webcam and save a heap there. But then it wouldn't be the single cable to do all the display related things box that it is for an attached Mac mini or MacBook in clamshell mode.

Cheap doesn't enter into it. They don't do cheap well.
