Probably a bit of luck, and someone who decided it might be worth something as a collectors item as it comes with the original box, even if that is the box for a warranty replacement.

I love these warranty replacement boxes and collect them. I would like to invest in a brand new 2G soon. And yes I think your theory is right on both counts, luck and collectibility.

Sadly, my 2G has a broken digitizer (the LCD is fine), and that's an expensive fix on 1st & 2nd Gens, apparently.

I haven't looked at the iFixit guides for that part, but if you are willing to do it yourself I bet you could find a first gen with the outside trashed but the internal hardware ok for cheap and reuse the parts from that for your repair.
