How do apple orders work?

Ok so by accident i placed an order tonight for a retina ipad and i did it from the iphone apple app and by accident i choose ship to address instead of store pickup.So i cancelled the order..What i dont understand is is your credit card billed at purchase time?it would seem no but at least a hold is place on those funds.When can i expect to get them back?
