The search mechanism isn't very good.

I searched:
backup iphoto pictures tiger

and got nothing.

So How do I do it?

I know that iphoto and itunes likes to be in control of organizing files and file locations.

I need to take my MBP in to shop since I have the dreaded keyboard and trackpad freezing problem that got progressively work and now will not come back. (currently using a usb keyboard and usb mouse)

So can I just drag the "pictures" folder to my EHD?

and can I do the same with the "music folder?"

will that adequately back up both iphoto and itunes in case they replace my computer?

If you have the space I would clone the entire internal hard drive onto your EHD. Use disk_utility, Carbon Copy Cloner or Superduper.

If you want to backup iphoto and itunes to need to copy these folders

users/<YOURUSERNAME>/music/itunes
users/<YOURUSERNAME>/pictures/

Also copy the applications preference files :

users/<YOURUSERNAME>/library/preferences/com.apple.itunes.plist
users/<YOURUSERNAME>/library/preferences/com.apple.iphoto.plist

Which version of iPhoto are you using? If it's from iLife 08 then inside the pictures folder there will be a colorful icon called "iPhoto Library", you can drag and drop that onto an external HDD or DVD. In the music folder just drag the iTunes music folder from that on to an external HDD or DVD.

is there a guide on macrumors on how to make a clone with disk utility?

if i clone my computer (tiger)

and the off chance that my computer is replaced by a leopard macbook pro,

how will the clone work with the new leopard computer...

?
